Essay 1: Mobile Computing

Mobile Computing : A technology that allows transmission of information, via a computer, without having to be connected to a fixed physical link.“Mobile voice communication is widely established throughout the world and has had a very rapid increase in the number of subscribers to the various cellular networks over the last few years. An extension of this technology is the ability to send and receive information across these cellular networks. This is the principle of mobile computing.’’ (James Bryan, 1984)  Mobile data communication has become a very important and rapidly evolving technology as it allows users to transmit data from remote locations to other remote or fixed locations. This proves to be the solution to the biggest problem of business people on the move - mobility. In this article we give an overview of existing cellular networks and describe in detail the CDPD technology which allows data communications across these networks. Finally, we look at the applications of Mobile Computing in the real world.
In 1960's military started using different types of wireless communication devices for many years. Wireless communications created great advances not only in the communication systems, but also in the aviation and space programs as well. Initially the military developed wireless communication through line of sight (If there were no obstacles between point A and B, you could send and receive electromagnetic waves). Later on, new techniques came that allowed to encompass larger areas such as using atmosphere as the reflection medium. ‘’Later in the 1970's satellite systems emerged and were commercialized. With the arrival of satellite communication systems, the quality of service and reliability increased dramatically.’’ (Paul Jackson, 1928)
Mobile Computing has become a tool in everyday use for personal communication and in the business world, such as Hospitals for patient records. It is used in the workplace to keep in contact with co-workers, clients, and customers. There is a lot of benefits to mobile computing although it has it’s drawbacks, too. Nowadays, you can use your Cell Phone, Laptops, Smartbooks, Netbooks, & PDA’s. You can use a variety of applications with being mobile; FaceBook, Twitter, MySpace, Microsoft Office Live, and Outlook. While mobile computing is fun and easy now, there are still a lot of problems with staying mobile. Limited Bandwidth Wireless networks deliver lower bandwidth than wired networks Slow and sometimes disconnected communication Portability results limited resources Power consumption – you don’t want to carry a batter bigger than your portable device .
Mobile computing is an important, evolving technology. It enables mobile personnel to effectively communicate and interact with the fixed organizational information system while remaining unconstrained by physical location. Mobile computing may be implemented using many combinations of hardware, software, and communications technologies. The technologies must be carefully selected and the applications designed to achieve the business needs required from the overall organizational information system. The MOBILE framework can assist information technology professionals in determining the applicability of mobile technology to an organizational problem, opportunity, or directive. “As mobile computing has become mission critical for businesses of any size, Dell found that customers care about durability, security and constant access to critical business information. These new Latitude systems address and exceed these customer needs in robust design, comprehensive security options, integrated mobile broadband and significant reductions from the prior generation products in weight and thickness” (Alex Gruzen, 1892)

What I think about mobile computing is that it made a lot of difference in this generation. It made the human lives much easier, for example: At work, or at schools etc. It helped a lot of people on their presentation on their jobs and made it look better. You can carry it anywhere you go, and do your work there. So to conclude everything, mobile computing made a lot of difference.
